The Columbus & Greenville Railway (C&G) was a freight and passenger railway operating in the state of Mississippi. It's main line of 168 miles ran from Columbus to Greenville, Mississippi. The C&G acted as a bridge line from west to east, connecting across the Mississippi River at Greenville with west bank roads that eventually were part of the Missouri Pacific., and at eastern points with the Southern and Mobile & Ohio Railroads. In the 30's and early 40's the C&G offered both passenger and mixed train passenger services by steam power or by gas -electric motor cars, and in the early 40's ran an air-conditioned coach train, the Deltan, between Columbus and Greenville. The road was freight only y the late 40's. The C&G ran many timed through freights on this important east-west connection. The C&G was acquired by the Illinois Central Gulf in 1972. The ICG attempted abandonment but failed. It was sold again in 1974. In 2006 it was owned by CAGY Industries and named again the Columbus and Greenville Railway.

Short history of the Columbus & Greenville Railway (C&G)
1870 - The Greenville, Deer Creek, & Rolling Fork RR was chartered in July 1870.
c 1870's - GDC&RF name changed to Greenville Columbus and Birmingham Railroad.
1878 - First spike laid on GC&B. It was narrow gage line, at that time, and ran from Greenville to the Sunflower River, with a branch extending southward to Rolling Fork, and Sharkey on Deer Creek, a total of about 52 miles.
1881 - In an effort to build a southern transcontinental RR, the GC&B merged with two other roads, in the hopes of connecting Atlanta with the Texas & Pacific RR, at Texarkana AR. That company became the Georgia Pacific Railway, with rails from Atlanta GA. to Greenville MS.. This venture was backed by the Richmond & Danville RR,
1894 - In September the R&D merged with the East Tennessee, Virginia & Georgia, RR to become the Southern RR.
1895 - The Southern leased the GP RR, and named it the Southern RR of Mississippi.
1889-92 - The SofM is connected across the Mississippi River by rail car ferry to the Arkansas Valley RR, ( later part of the Missouri Pacific), and SofM operation turned over to Mobile & Ohio.
1905 - Roundhouse and passenger depot erected in Columbus.
1920 - The name of the railroad was changed to the, Columbus & Greenville Railroad.
1923 - Under new management it became the Columbus and Greenville Railway. They bought some used engines that kept them going through WW II.
1930 - In December the C&G was operating one steam passenger train, one gas-electric motor train and one mixed train between Columbus and Greenville;168 miles.
1943 - C&G now running a single air conditioned coach "Name" train, the Deltan, between Columbus and Greenville on a slightly faster schedule, than in the 30's, and also one mixed train.
1943-6 - During WW II The C&G helped the Baldwin Locomotive Works design a 1,500 HP diesel road switcher with six axles, and in 1946, took delivery of the first one built.
1949 - C&G is freight only.
1951 - Last of 5 Baldwin six axle switchers received.
1951 - Last steam locomotive retired.
1972 - The C&G was sold to the Illinois Central Gulf RR., which intended to shut it down, but some local shippers took the ICG to court, and the C&G remained in service.
1974 - The Columbus and Greenville Railway (C & G) was organized in 1974 to acquire the rail line from Columbus, Mississippi to Greenville, Mississippi from the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad.
1975 - The C & G began rail freight operation on that line on October 29, 1975. The C & G currently operates on 150 miles of main line track between West Point and Greenville and 25 miles of trackage rights over the Kansas City Southern from Columbus to West Point.
1983 - Tombigbee River Bridge (near Waverly) damaged by barge accident and thus a 10 mile section of the C & G between Columbus and West Point was abandoned soon after.
c1983 - Trackage rights agreement with the ICG to run from Columbus to Artesia and then to West Point, avoiding abandoned line.
1987 - Te last of the original 60 lb. Rail replaced, it had been down a hundred years.
c 2001 - The C&G is called the CAGY, and runs a variety of power, GP7s, CF7s, and two GP38s. The CAGY operates two even smaller roads, the Chattooga, & Chickamauga RY, with HQ in LaFayette GA. and the Luxapalila Valley RR., HQ Columbus.
2006 - The C & G is owned by CAGY Industries, Inc., with the majority of the stock being held by Mississippians. The C & G caters to local small industries within the State of Mississippi as well as large corporations that have facilities on the railroad. These companies ship and receive a wide range of products by rail from agricultural commodities to steel products.
The C & G handles a mixture of local freight and interchange traffic at various points on the railroad. The C & G maintains interchange connections with the Canadian National/Illinois Central Railway Company at Greenwood and Winona; the Luxapalila Valley Railroad, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, the Norfolk Southern, and the Golden Triangle Railroad at Columbus; the Kansas City Southern at Columbus, West Point and Artesia; and the CSXT Transportation Company at Birmingham, Alabama through a car haul agreement with the KCS. The C & G also has an interchange with the Great River Railroad at Metcalf, MS, which serves the Port of Rosedale on the Mississippi River.
