The St. Louis - San Francisco Railway (Frisco)(SLSF) was a large railroad system with lines from St. Louis and Kansas City throughout the states of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. It served major southwest and southeast cities including St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri, Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Memphis, Tennessee, Birmingham, Alabama and Pensacola, Florida.(rp)
The St. Louis & San Francisco Railway was incorporated in Missouri on September 7, 1876. It was formed from the Missouri Division and Central Division of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. After bankruptcy, the Frisco emerged as the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad, which was incorporated on 29 June 1896. This company, too, went bankrupt; on 24 August 1916, the company was reorganized as the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway.
The SLSF had two main lines: St. Louis - Tulsa - Oklahoma City and Kansas City - Memphis - Birmingham. The junction of the two lines was in Springfield, Missouri, which also played home to the

company's headquarters and main shops facility. Other Lines included Springfield - Kansas City (via Clinton, Missouri; Monett, Missouri (Pierce City) - Wichita, Kansas; Monett - Fort Smith, Arkansas; St. Louis - River Jct., Arkansas (Memphis, Tennessee); Tulsa, Oklahoma - Dallas, Texas; Tulsa to Avard, Oklahoma; and Lakeside, Oklahoma - Hugo, Oklahoma - Hope, Arkansas.
From 1915 through 1959 the Frisco, in a joint venture with the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (aka MKT or the Katy), operated the Texas Special. This luxury passenger
liner ran from St. Louis to Dallas, Ft. Worth, and San Antonio. The Texas Special is a popular prototype in Model Railroading.
During the 30's and 40's a direct connection was made from Chicago to Oklahoma City on Pullman sleeping cars utilizing the Alton from Chicago to St. Louis and continuing on the Frisco's "Will Rogers" to Oklahoma City.
The Frisco was acquired by the Burlington Northern Railroad on November 21, 1980.(wik)

Short History of the St. Louis - San Francisco Railway (Frisco Lines)
The name -- St. Louis-San Francisco Railway Company represents aspirations rather than eventualities, as Frisco tracks extend west scarcely within half a continent of the Golden Gate.
Atlantic and Pacifig Railway and predecessors
1845 - John Fremont surveys routes from St. Louis and Memphis toward Oklahoma Territory
1849 - St. Louis was looking to build a railroad to the Pacific. A pamphlet (Boston Plan) suggests rail from St. Louis to San Francisco.
1849 - In March the Pacific Railroad was chartered by an act of the Missouri legislature to build to western state line
1850 - James Kirkwood supervises actual route survey (close to Fremont's work).
1851 - Groundbreaking in July for Pacific Railroad. First steam railroad west of Mississippi River
1852 - First division opened St. Louis to Franklin (now Pacific) 37 miles
1852 - Federal law allows land grants for Missouri to build two railroads cross-state.
1852 - The state approved an amendment to the 1849 Pacific Railroad law in December 1852, adding a Southwest Branch that would receive the grants.
1856 - Work on southwest branch to Springfield begun. (Eventually Frisco main line)
1856-65 - Pacific main to Jefferson City and Kansas City built
1860 - SW branch opened Franklin (Pacific) to Dillon, 71 miles.
1861 - SW branch continued to Rolla, another 6 miles.
1866 - Both the KC main and the SW branch of the Pacific RR defaulted and were separated. The main to KC became nucleus of the Missouri Pacific. Fremont bought the SW branch, renamed it the Southwest Pacific (SWP) and proposed a continuation to San Francisco.
1866 - In July, Congress passed a law incorporating the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad under control of Frémont and associates. With the power to build from Springfield, Missouri west to the Pacific, with a branch from Van Buren, Arkansas. In exchange for its completion by 1878, the railroad would receive land grants along its route.
1867 - A&P purchases the SWP.
1867 - SWP laid rails ro Arlington, another 12 miles.
1867-68 - Fremont's fortunes fail and SWP defaults on bonds and is siezed by the state and property becomes the South Pacific Railway.
1870 - South Pacific reaches Springfield, Missouri in May
1870 - South Pacific merged with Atlantic & Pacific
1870 - Another 164 miles to Pierce City and 39 miles of grading to Seneca on the state line were completed.
1871 - A&P reaches Missouri western border at Oklahoma Territory, and Vinita, OK
1872 - A&P leases St. Louis to KC line
1872-1881 - A&P builds and acquires branch lines into rich lead and zinc areas and coal fields in Western Missouri & Kansas
1875 - A&P goes into receivership and the Pacific Railroad lease is canceled.
St. Louis - San Francisco Railwayd (Frisco)(SLSF) 1876-1896
1876 - A&P is sold. The newly organized St. Louis and San Francisco Railway obtains SW Branch through Springfield to Oklahoma, and SL-KC line conveyed to new Missouri Pacific Railroad Company
1876-1883 - SLSF gets trackage rights from Pacific to St. Louis until it's own line to St. Louis is finished in 1883
1872-1887 - Indian nations object to Frisco's (A&P's) ambitious plans to build west . Federal agencies side with Indians. Frisco's plan (Atlantic & Pacific charter) to build to Albuquerque, the Colorado River and San Francisco never materialize
1872-1880 - Frisco extends line to Wichita connecting with Santa Fe
1881-1896 - Frisco becomes pawn to J. Gould, the Santa Fe and UP-SP interests. Frisco and Santa Fe built jointly from Albuquerque to the Colorado River using Frisco (A&P) land grants. Frisco then sold this line off to Santa Fe, losing it's opportunity to get to west coast
1882-1886 - Frisco extends line from Vinita into Oklahoma territory to Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Lawton
1883 - Frisco builds its own linee into St. Louis.
1884-89 - Frisco completes direct line KC to Springfield
1885-86 - Frisco extends lines in Kansas
1880-1887 - Line south to Texas connecting to T&P to Dallas and Fort Worth completed
1890 - Frisco under Santa Fe Management
1893 - Frisco and Santa Fe both in receivership
1894 - A&P also in receivership.
Frisco's Competitor - the "Gulf"
1865 - Frisco's competing road (the "Gulf") incorporated in March. First road built south out of KC.
1866-70 -Gulf completed KC to Baxter Springs
1868 - Name changed to Missouri River Fort Scott and Gulf (MRFS&G). Intent to reach gulf through Indian territory and Texas
1870 - Katy beats Gulf to Oklahoma territory and connects with Frisco at Vinita, reducing Gulf's business
1874 - Gulf subsidiary Fort Scott Southeastern and Memphis (FSS&M) builds spurs into coal fields and toward Springfield
1878-79 - Gulf suffered foreclosure and is refinanced.
1879-81 - Gulf obtains Springfield and Western and builds line to complete connection to Springfield from KC
1883 - Gulf reaches west bank of Mississippi at Memphis
1884 - Gulf acquires coal areas in Missouri and builds shorter route from KC to rival Frisco
1886 - Gulf subsidiary KC Memphis and Birmingham Railroad acquire incompleted lines southwest of Memphis
1887 - KCM&B completed to Birmingham
1888 - Gulf name changed to Kansas City Fort Scott and Memphis (KCFS&M) Railroad
1892 - Bridge across Mississippi at Memphis precludes need for utilizing ferry
1896 - The Gulf Lines (KCFS&M, and KCM&B) are operationally absorbed into The Frisco
1901 - KCFS&B bought by Frisco
1903 - KCM&B is leased by Frisco
1928 - Assets of KCM&B transferred to Frisco
St. Louis - San Francisco Railroad (Frisco)(SLSF) 1896-1916
1896 - Santa Fe & Frisco divorced and Frisco's connections thru Santa Fe to west coast ended. Frisco reorganized as the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway Company
1896- Trackage owned 990 miles
1896-1913 - Expansion years and cooperation with Rock Island
1896-1904 - Expansions in Oklahoma, in Texas to Brownsville, and down the west side of the Mississippi from St. Louis, and absorption of the Gulf lines expanded mileage to 5401
1897 - The remaining central division of the A&P is sold to the reorganized SLSF (Frisco), ending the A&P's existence.
1901 - KCFS&B bought by Frisco
1902 - C&EI under Frisco control
1902 - The Arkansas Valley and Western Railway (AV&W) was built as a short line railroad operating within the U.S. state of Oklahoma. It was founded in 1902 to link the city of Tulsa with the main transcontinental line of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF) at Avard.
1902-03 - The AV&W was built in sections, initially from AV&W Jct. (West Tulsa) to Steen.
1903 - KCM&B is leased by Frisco
1904 - The AV&W was extended westward to the junction with AT&SF at Avard.
1907 - On July 19, the AV&W was purchased by the St. Louis-San Francisco Railroad.
1911-14 - Loss of Mexican traffic, Mississippi floods and coal strikes cause big operating losses
1913 - Frisco and C&EI in receivership. Frisco relationship with Rock Island dissolved
St. Louis - San Francisco Railway (Frisco)(SLSF) 1916-1980
1916 - Frisco emerges from bankruptcy as St. Louis-San Francisco Railway. Line to Brownsville Texas sold.
1920 - Frisco loses control of C&EI
1926-28 - Line to Pensacola, Florida acquired and completed
1928 - Assets of KCM&B transferred to Frisco
1932 - Frisco back in receivership
1933-47 - Operated under trusteeship
1948 - Frisco acquires Alabama Tennessee and Northern and gains entrance into Mobile
1948-51 - Infrastructure improvements and CTC installed
1952 - Last steam locomotive retired
1980 - Frisco acquired by Burlington- Northern
